Confucius, the great ancient Chinese educator, had profound views on education.
He believed that education should be accessible to everyone regardless of their social status. His famous saying, "Education without distinction," reflects this belief. Confucius emphasized the importance of moral cultivation in education. He taught his students to pursue virtue and strive for personal improvement. He also stressed the balance between learning and reflection, advocating that one should constantly review and think about what they have learned.
Furthermore, Confucius encouraged his students to ask questions and seek knowledge actively. He once said, "Learning without thought is labor lost; thought without learning is perilous." This highlights the significance of critical thinking in the educational process.
The basic goal of education—to cultivate “persons of virtue” with sound character and uplifted minds, able to shoulder important social responsibilities and to make contributions to society.
Confucius’ emphasis on aesthetic education Confucius said “Studying The Book of Songs (Shijing) inspires the spirit and helps one appreciate beauty. Studying The Book of Rites (Zhouli) enables one to behave properly as a person of enlightenment. Studying music lifts the spirit and helps one to enjoy life.
