Hello everyone, I’m Ms. Carter, your English Composition teacher, and today I want to walk you through some of the most common writing mistakes I see—and how you can fix them.
First, let’s talk about run-on sentences. This happens when you join multiple ideas without proper punctuation. For example: “I went to the store I bought milk.” Instead, break it into two sentences or use a comma with a conjunction: “I went to the store, and I bought milk.”
Next is subject-verb agreement. A singular subject needs a singular verb, and a plural subject needs a plural verb. For instance, “She go to school” should be “She goes to school.”
Another common issue is misusing punctuation, especially commas. Commas help clarify meaning, so placing them incorrectly can confuse your reader. Always check where natural pauses occur in your sentence.
Also, watch out for spelling and word choice errors, like confusing “their,” “there,” and “they’re.” These small mistakes can affect your credibility.
My tip? Always proofread your work, read it aloud, and don’t rely entirely on spell check.
Improving your writing takes practice, but by avoiding these common mistakes, you’ll communicate your ideas much more clearly. Keep writing and keep improving!
